Introduction: Health insurance literacy, as a subset of health literacy, plays an essential role in empowering individuals to effectively use insurance services. A clear understanding of insurance concepts and processes can lead to more informed decision-making in treatment and health. Considering this importance, the present study aimed to examine the level of insurance literacy and identify related factors among the insured of the Health Insurance Organization in Yazd in 2025.
Methods: This descriptive–analytical, applied, and cross-sectional study was conducted using a survey method. Data were collected from a random sample of 249 insured individuals referring to counter offices of the health insurance contract partners in Yazd. The data were gathered through a standard insurance literacy questionnaire. Statistical analysis was carried out using descriptive indicators and analytical tests such as Mann–Whitney and Kruskal–Wallis, with the aid of SPSS version 27.
Results: The findings showed that 63.8% of the insured had high or very high levels of insurance literacy. The highest mean score belonged to the “information access” dimension, while the lowest was related to “functional skills.” Men, individuals with higher education, and those with greater income achieved significantly higher scores. In addition, a meaningful relationship was observed between total insurance literacy and marital status.
Conclusion: Although the insurance literacy level of the study population was relatively desirable, some groups, particularly women and those with lower education and income, still require targeted education. Enhancing public training for these groups can play a key role in improving appropriate utilization of insurance services.
