Introduction: Digital transformation and emerging technologies have required the insurance industry with the need to reconsider service delivery and interactions among stakeholders. Platform innovation provides a basis for interaction among insurance companies, customers, InsurTechs, and other actors and has emerged as a novel approach to transformation in the industry. Given the simultaneous importance of the economic and social dimensions of innovation, identifying the drivers of platform innovation with a social innovation approach is essential.
Methods: This applied study is qualitative in nature and is based on a meta-synthesis approach. To identify and organize the drivers of platform innovation with a social innovation approach, the seven-stage framework of Sandelowski and Barroso was employed. Studies published between 2017 and 2026 were searched in selected domestic and international scientific databases, with the latest literature search conducted on 6 August 2026 (15 Mordad 1405). Of the 277 studies identified, 51 articles were selected for final analysis following screening and quality assessment based on the CASP criteria. The extracted concepts were coded and synthesized using qualitative content analysis.
Results: Analysis of the selected studies resulted in the identification of 217 initial concepts, which, after refinement and synthesis, were organized into 44 components and 8 main dimensions. These dimensions included environmental and institutional, organizational, technological, platform-related, customer and societal, economic and market, network and ecosystem, and human and skills dimensions. The findings indicated that the identified drivers encompass, in addition to technological capabilities, a range of institutional conditions, organizational and human capacities, platform characteristics, customer participation and trust, economic and market conditions, and ecosystem interactions.
Conclusion: The extracted framework indicates that identifying the drivers of platform innovation with a social innovation approach in the insurance industry requires simultaneous consideration of institutional, organizational, technological, social, economic, ecosystem, and human dimensions. The conceptual linkage between platform innovation and social innovation is also reflected in components such as stakeholder participation, trust, value co-creation, and social value creation. This framework can provide a basis for validating, prioritizing, and examining the relationships among the identified components in future research.
